Seasonal Planting Combinations by Arnold Garden Design

Seasonal Planting combinations in Autumn by Arnold Garden Design In October & November the last of the roses are in bloom and in my garden, including Rosa Tess d’Urbervilles, from David Austin Roses. This is backed by the now crimson leaves of climber Parthenocissus quinquefolia. While in the foreground I have my autumn favourite Sedum spectabile and grass Stipa tenuissima. Sedum has light green foliage and large flower heads, which change from bright pink to a deep red, in autumn. Together these shrubs and climbers make a really rich vibrant seasonal planting combination. Further down the wall Parthenocissus trails over the yellow/ lime leaves of Choisya ternata ‘Sun Dance’ with a contrasting splash of colour. Also for bright autumn colour plant shrub Cotinus coggygria with it’s beautiful foliage. Other shrubs which give good displays of red autumn foliage colour include Berberis ‘Rubrostilla’ , Vaccinium a. laevifolium and Euonymus alatus. The  deciduous shrub, Cornus alba ‘ Elegantissima’  has attractive grey-green,white- margined leaves and white flowers in early summer. But one of  it’s best features are the bright red stems which show when leaves fall, in autumn.  Cornus kousa, with coloured stems,  has glossy foliage which turns red to purple. Cornus sanguina ‘ Mid Winter Fire’  has distinctive young shoots, which are coloured orange/red in autumn and winter and this looks fabulous planted in groups, beside water, contrasting well with purple stemmed varieties of dogwood.   Planting Design: Autumn Fruits & Berries in Seasonal Planting Combinations Trees and shrubs with bright colourful fruits and berries add interest to gardens during autumn and winter.
