SPRING PLANTS TO GROW

Planting Combinations in Mid Spring Good spring plants to grow, for colour and interest are Hellebores and Pulmonarias. From early spring the evergreen flowering Hellebores are in bloom, situated in a shady spot, they add lots of varied colour and interest to a border, for example the attractive Harvington Hybrids.  The  deep red/black ‘Phillip Ballard’ perhaps grown with the white and purple spotted ‘Cosmos’. The foliage is an attractive, deep glossy green and they self-seed freely. Pulmonarias are in bloom useful plants for shady difficult sites as they combine well with Ferns, Hostas and other shade dwellers. Pulmonaria ‘Diana Clare’ has spotted light green leaves, with purplish / blue flowers and P. angustifolia ‘Munstead Blue’ has green bristly foliage and soft blue flowers....

Winter Colour – A flowering Strelitzier reginae

Winter Colour A Flowering Strelitzier reginae arnoldgardendesign.co.uk/Post Before studying  Garden Design, developing a hobby, I studied for a City & Guilds Gardening Diploma,  including a Propagation course.  Trying amongst other things, growing some exotics including  for winter colour a Flowering Strelitzier reginae. So we now have bright seasonal planting colour for the home through the grey wintery days, with a flowering Strelitzier. Initially it grew quite easily, started from seed in sand, placed in an airing cupboard and then potted-on. It never flowered in a sunny west facing window, but having moved it seems to like it’s new home in the hotter south facing bay, more similar to it’s natural habitat  on the East Coast of South Africa. The leaves if picked will dry in interesting curving shapes, quite very useful for the minimal, sculptual Japanese Ikebana flower arranging, as can the flowers, though it seems a shame to pick them as they last for months! Diana arnoldgardendesign.co.uk Container Design – Indoor Containers Exotic plants such as Strelizier reginae, or ‘Bird of Paradise’, can be grown indoors from a seed. It’s best to position the pot in a warm & sunny place. It can be moved outside in the hottest summer months and provide much needed colour indoors winter time. The leaves when cut and dried shrivel into curving interesting shapes, which can be used in Japanese Ikebana style flower arrangements. Strelitzia or ‘Bird of...

Seasonal Planting Combinations by Arnold Garden Design

Seasonal Planting combinations in Autumn by Arnold Garden Design In October & November the last of the roses are in bloom and in my garden, including Rosa Tess d’Urbervilles, from David Austin Roses. This is backed by the now crimson leaves of climber Parthenocissus quinquefolia. While in the foreground I have my autumn favourite Sedum spectabile and grass Stipa tenuissima. Sedum has light green foliage and large flower heads, which change from bright pink to a deep red, in autumn. Together these shrubs and climbers make a really rich vibrant seasonal planting combination. Further down the wall Parthenocissus trails over the yellow/ lime leaves of Choisya ternata ‘Sun Dance’ with a contrasting splash of colour. Also for bright autumn colour plant shrub Cotinus coggygria with it’s beautiful foliage. Other shrubs which give good displays of red autumn foliage colour include Berberis ‘Rubrostilla’ , Vaccinium a. laevifolium and Euonymus alatus. The  deciduous shrub, Cornus alba ‘ Elegantissima’  has attractive grey-green,white- margined leaves and white flowers in early summer. But one of  it’s best features are the bright red stems which show when leaves fall, in autumn.  Cornus kousa, with coloured stems,  has glossy foliage which turns red to purple. Cornus sanguina ‘ Mid Winter Fire’  has distinctive young shoots, which are coloured orange/red in autumn and winter and this looks fabulous planted in groups, beside water, contrasting well with purple stemmed varieties of dogwood.   Planting Design: Autumn Fruits & Berries in Seasonal Planting Combinations Trees and shrubs with bright colourful fruits and berries add interest to gardens during autumn and winter. The yellow berries of Sorbus ‘Joseph Rock’, mix...
